As I am sitting here thinking about what in the world I am going to get my kids for Christmas this year I decided to share with all of you some ideas for healthier alternatives to putting candy in your kid’s Christmas stockings. When my family made the decision to eliminate a lot of the “bad” stuff from our lives candy is one thing that my kid’s fought me on and still do from time to time. I grew up in a house that never had anything even remotely healthy. Our dinners came out of a box everyday and we used chemical filled cleaning and beauty products. Now that I am grown I think back to all the horrible things that I put into my body growing up that it makes me cringe. I have significant health problems now because of this and I made a vow to myself that I would not let this happen to my kids.
At Christmas time it is hard for my kids because although my family makes decisions not to have things like regular candy our other family members do not live this same lifestyle. I have had to give grandparents lists of things to give to the kids because if not they would have nothing buy candy in their stockings. It really is easy to have a healthier Christmas stocking that the kids will not even notice that regular candy is not in there.
Here are some suggestions to use instead:
1 .Organic Candy: You can get candy that does not have all the artificial ingredients or high fructose corn syrup in them. Some of my kids favorites are YumEarth Organic Lollipops and YumEarth Organic Gummy Bears. My kids favorite candy bar is the Theo Organic Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Cups. We tried these out at a Mother Earth News Fair this past summer and they loved them!
2. Fruit: If your child has a favorite fruit you could replace some of the candy with the fruit in there. My son loves clementines so he always gets a couple of those in his stocking.
3. Small Toys: I have opted to get small toys to fill my kids stocking. You can get some really neat stuff for cheap at the dollar store or other stores. This week I find lego minifigure sets for 1.00 each at my local dollar store and I plan to use those this year in the stocking.
4. Art Supplies: Pencils, Pens, Markers, Crayons, etc all make great things to stick in the stockings.
5. Personal Supplies: A new toothbrush with their favorite character would fit or a new hair bow they have wanted.
These are just a few things that could easily replace the candy bars and gummy candy that a lot of people use in their stockings. Just making this small switch will help your family take the next step to living a healthier lifestyle!
Thanks for stopping by!!
