DIY Non-Toxic Laundry Detergent

I have a daughter that has very sensitive skin and would break out with a ton of different laundry soaps.  It is so bad that whenever we travel and have to stay at a hotel I have to completely strip the bedding and use our own towels because she will break out in hives if her skin comes in contact with a lot of the detergents that they use!    I started buying her the Free and Clear brands of laundry soap and she seemed to be fine with those but it was costing me a small fortune even with coupons and sales to buy the laundry soap.  Then, I read an article about what was really in the laundry soaps at the stores and what they do to your body and decided I absolutely had to come up with an alternative for a DIY non-toxic Laundry Detergent.

About 6 months ago, I started making our own laundry soap and if anything have noticed our clothing being cleaner than before with the store bought soap!  I tried several different recipes on making this from various sites and finally found one that was the closest to what I wanted but then I had to tweek the ingredients.  I like to have bubbles in my washing machine as a way that I know the soap is there (I’m kinda weird like that 🙂 )

To make the laundry soap you only need 3 ingredients so it is very simple and it is very cheap to make!  I will include links to buy all your ingredients online or you can look for them at your local store!

DIY Non-Toxic Laundry Detergent

  • 3 tablespoons Borax
  • 3 tablespoons Washing Soda
  • 3 tablespoons Dawn Dish Soap (Blue)
  • Water
  • Gallon Jug or Bucket

Step 1
On the stove get 4 cups of water and bring to a boil
Step 2
Take a gallon bucket (I use a large ice cream bucket) and fill about 1/4 full of cold water
Step 3
Mix in your borax, washing soda, and dish soap in the cold water and stir
Step 4
Add in your 4 cups of HOT water into the bucket with the other water and ingredients and then fill the bucket the rest of the way with cold water.
Step 5
Stir up until dissolved (it only takes a second) Then you are ready to use!
Step 6
For a large size load I use about 1 cup of detergent.

  1. […] I make my own laundry detergent and have been doing this for several years now.  My daughter has very sensitive skin so before I started making our own laundry soap I had to be super careful what laundry detergent we bought.  It had to be free and clear and even then she would break out in hives or rashes from time to time.  Once I learned all the HORRIBLE chemicals that were in store bought laundry detergent I set out on a mission to make our own that was safe for my daughters skin.  I’m happy to say that the laundry recipe I use know has not caused one issue on her sensitive skin!  If you want the recipe on how I make our laundry soap it is here –> Homemade Laundry Soap […]
